Black Women for Wellness to host policy briefing on October 1

Black Women for Wellness will present the findings of RESPECT: Integrity & Inclusion of African Americans in Health Care, last years’ highly successful conference, at a policy briefing to be held on Friday, October 1 at the California African American Museum. The briefing will begin at 9:00 a.m.

Black Women for Wellness has a 10 year history of presenting conferences reporting on the status of Black women’s health in our community. From Birth Stories (1999) to RESPECT! (2009), we have highlighted reproductive health status, gender issues and challenges of and to African American and Black women in Los Angeles. Black Women for Wellness has prepared publications grounded with this knowledge and expertise of community leadership, researchers, advocates and health care professionals, and will share this knowledge at the briefing.

The Black Women for Wellness briefing will provide recommendations for inclusion in health care settings, a health status report and a definition of reproductive justice. This briefing will highlight models of culturally competent health care services for African American women and girls in Los Angeles County.

The briefing will offer information and insights to health care professionals, community advocates, grassroots leadership, researchers and policy makers toward building coalition among people of color, impacting health disparity and leading the nation with eliminating health disparity experienced by Black women & girls.

For more information about this event, please call (323) 290-5955 or visit us online at www.bwwla.com.

GRACE CHURCH TO HOST FORUM ON HIV AND SENIORS

Los Angeles City AIDS Coordinator Stephen Simon will moderate a panel discussion on “Sexual Health and Seniors: The Truth About HIV/AIDS” at a community forum being sponsored by Grace United Methodist Church on Saturday, September 18, 2010. The event, which will begin with a free luncheon and educational presentation from noon until 1:30pm, will be followed by the panel discussion from 1:30pm until 3pm. The forum is being presented in observance of National HIV and Aging Awareness Day, and is part of Grace UMC’s Quarterly Speaker Series.

Confirmed panelists include Dr. Derrick Butler, family medicine and HIV specialist from T.H.E. Clinic; Dr. Nina Harawa, HIV epidemiologist at Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science; HIV treatment advocate James Miller; Carrie Brodus, Executive Director of Women Alive; and HIV activist LeWanda Gersham.

HIV/AIDS Ministry Chairperson Charles McWells explains why Grace Church is hosting a forum on seniors and HIV. “People assume that HIV and AIDS are diseases that only affect younger people. The truth is about one-third of all people living with HIV/AIDS in the U.S. are aged 50 or older, and that number is expected to grow to one-half by 2015. African American women account for about 65% of all HIV infections among older women.” According to McWells, the goal of the forum is to increase the community’s awareness of the need for prevention, research and data targeting the aging population, medical understanding of the aging process and its impact on HIV/AIDS.

Co-sponsors of the September 18 community forum include the National Council of Negro Women – Los Angeles View Park Section, SPECTRUM Community Services and Research, the Bienestar HIV Mobile Testing Program, and the Grace UMC 50+ Club. While admission to the event is free, reservations are required. To RSVP, contact Grace United Methodist Church at (323) 294-6653. Grace United Methodist Church is located at 4112 W. Slauson Avenue, Los Angeles, 90043.

Please see attached flyer.
