RCTR Newsletter: Collaboration Issue 2

In partnership with several local organizations, the University of Hawaii’s (UH) John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) Department of Pediatrics and the Hawaii Initiative for Childhood Obesity Research and Education (HICORE) recently launched a new collaborative community campaign to address childhood obesity. The “Hawaii 5-2-1 -0 Let’s Go! ” is an initiative to romote healthy eating and active living and prevent childhood obesity in Hawaii through a coordinated, collaborative, locally relevant health education campaign. The new initiative provides practical tools and materials for Hawaii’s doctors and families to promote a healthy lifestyle message and is modeled after successful programs in other states. As a spin on the popular hit series, Hawaii Five-0, the name “Hawaii 5-2-1 -0” sums up four key healthy lifestyle recommendations:

5 or more fruits or vegetables a day
2 hours or less of screen time a day
1 hour or more of physical activity per day
0 sugary drinks
